‘We Could All Be at Work Right Now’ CUPE Local 1656 Provides Strike Update

Striking outside workers gathered outside the Regional Municipality of Waterloo headquarters on Thursday to update the public on their ongoing job action, now entering its tenth day.

CUPE Local 1656 President Phil Dominas and CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn addressed both the media and a crowd of picketing workers at 9:30 a.m., reaffirming their stance in the dispute.

Since March 3, 220 outside workers have been on strike, leading to the closure of waste management centres in Waterloo and Cambridge.

“There’s no reason we should be standing here today. We could all be at work right now,” Dominas told the assembled crowd. “But we’re here because Regional Chair Karen Redman and her council chose to break their commitment to fair wages.”

As the strike continues, both sides remain at an impasse, leaving essential waste management services in limbo.
