The number of measles cases in Waterloo Region has jumped to 30, with 13 new cases reported, according to Public Health Ontario. This brings the rate to 4.4 cases per 100,000 people. Provincially, 95 new cases have been reported since last week, pushing the total number of measles cases to over 1,000.
Since the outbreak began last October, 1,020 people in Ontario have contracted measles. The ongoing rise in cases is attributed to continued exposures and transmission among unimmunized individuals. Southwestern Ontario has been particularly affected, with many new cases reported in the region.
Demographics Most Affected
Infants, children, and teens account for three-quarters of the total measles cases in Ontario. This highlights the importance of vaccination in these age groups.
National Update
Measles cases have been reported in six provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Alberta has reported 122 cases since its outbreak began in March. Quebec has declared its measles outbreak over, with no new cases reported in 32 days.
Public Health Concerns
The continued spread of measles emphasizes the need for vaccination and public awareness. Public Health Ontario and health agencies across the country are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.
