Humane Society Seeks Home for Stray Piggy

A Friendly Stray in Need of a Home

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth is looking to find a loving home for a young pig named Piggy. Discovered wandering the streets of downtown Kitchener last month, Piggy has since been cared for by the Humane Society and is now available for adoption.

Piggy’s Unique Background

Though the Humane Society doesn’t often handle pig adoptions, Thomas Hemming, director of finance, says they have experience with pigs and other exotic animals. Piggy, with his friendly demeanor, is believed not to have been raised as a typical farm animal, making him a special case for adoption.

Legal Considerations

Adopting Piggy comes with challenges due to local bylaws. Cambridge and Kitchener have city bans on owning pigs, while in Waterloo, pig ownership is restricted to agricultural-zoned properties under Region of Waterloo regulations. Prospective adopters must comply with these rules before bringing Piggy home.

Screening and Popularity

As Piggy has gained attention in the media, the Humane Society expects a higher-than-usual number of adoption applications. Hemming emphasizes the importance of thorough screening to ensure adopters not only meet legal requirements but also provide a safe and loving environment for Piggy.

What to Know About Adopting Piggy

Piggy is estimated to be four to six months old and currently weighs around 20 kilograms. However, Hemming warns that Piggy will grow significantly, and potential adopters must be prepared for the responsibility of caring for a larger animal. “Right now, he looks awfully cute. It will definitely get bigger,” Hemming noted.

The Cost and Care

The adoption fee for Piggy is $50. The Humane Society advises that adopters will need a large animal veterinarian for Piggy’s care, as he will not be neutered at the time of adoption. This highlights the need for a long-term commitment to his well-being.

Piggy’s Signature Blue Coat

Piggy’s stylish blue coat has charmed many. Hemming believes it was a thoughtful gift from a donor, volunteer, or staff member. While it adds to his appeal, the focus remains on finding him a loving and suitable home.

Conclusion

The Humane Society is dedicated to ensuring that every animal in its care finds the best possible home. Piggy’s unique personality and story make him a standout candidate for adoption, and the organization is committed to placing him in the perfect environment.
