A severe ice storm over the weekend has left hundreds of thousands of residents in eastern Canada without power. As of Sunday, more than 300,000 customers in Ontario experienced outages due to tree limbs and branches weighed down by freezing rain. Environment Canada issued winter storm warnings for Ottawa, parts of Quebec, and Ontario, with freezing rain and snow mixed with ice pellets expected to continue until Monday morning.
The city of Orillia in Ontario declared a state of emergency due to widespread power outages, hazardous road conditions, downed trees and hydro lines, and damage to infrastructure. Utilities provider Alectra reported about 35,000 customers without power, primarily in Barrie, a town north of Toronto.
Recovery efforts are underway, but some areas may remain without power for days as crews work to restore services amid challenging conditions.
