Negotiations Continue Between CUPE Local 1656 and Region of Waterloo

Talks are still underway between the Region of Waterloo and CUPE Local 1656, the union representing the region’s outside workers. Despite a Saturday morning meeting, the union rejected the latest offer from the regional government.

In a statement, Acting CAO Mathieu Goetzke emphasized that staff believe the proposed agreement was both “fair and competitive.”

“We recognize that this situation is affecting both residents and Regional employees,” Goetzke said. “I want to thank our dedicated teams who are working hard to maintain services safely and in line with all legislative requirements.”

With negotiations ongoing, both sides remain at the table, seeking a resolution.
