The Waterloo Region is on the verge of gaining a significant addition to its healthcare infrastructure with the advancement of plans for a new hospital. The collaborative efforts of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital have reached a pivotal phase as they confirm the approval of two recommended sites by the site selection panel in April. This decision follows a meticulous narrowing down from five potential sites to three in December.Ron Gagnon, President and CEO of Grand River Hospital, shared with CityNews 570 that discussions with the landowners of the two selected sites are currently in the preliminary stages. However, the specific locations of these sites remain undisclosed to prevent premature land speculation and to respect the ongoing negotiation process. The criteria for selecting these sites were comprehensive, focusing on several key factors. Each site needed to be at least 50 acres to accommodate the hospital’s infrastructure, including a helipad. The selection also considered the population density around the sites, their accessibility via major roads, highways, and public transit, and the overall cost of the land.As the negotiations with the landowners progress, further details about the project’s location and other relevant information are expected to be released. This development is part of a broader initiative by Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital not only to enhance healthcare services but also to integrate their operations into a single hospital network, thereby optimizing healthcare delivery in the region.
