Drivers are being reminded of safety precautions following three collisions involving ION trains within a 30-hour period this week. The incidents occurred between Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon, with at least one driver charged for making an unsafe turn.
Neil Malcolm, acting director of transit services for the Region of Waterloo, expressed concern over the collisions. He noted that while ION trains have been operating in Kitchener-Waterloo for over five years, such a cluster of incidents is unusual. Malcolm emphasized that locals have had ample time to adjust to the presence of the trains and should now be more aware.
He pointed out that some collisions may involve drivers unfamiliar with the area, which underscores the importance of paying attention to illuminated “Train” signs and lowered rail arms indicating an approaching train. Drivers are urged to stay vigilant, check blind spots, and avoid making unsafe turns near the rail lines.
Although ION trains operate quietly, they follow predictable paths on dedicated tracks, making them relatively easy to spot. Malcolm reassured that every collision involving an ION train or Grand River Transit bus prompts a thorough investigation to ensure safety protocols are being followed.
Safety reminders also extend to pedestrians and cyclists, who are advised to obey all signs and signals and to avoid crossing under lowered rail arms. Malcolm stressed the importance of awareness for everyone sharing space with the light rail system.
In cases where collisions disrupt ION services, replacement shuttle buses are deployed as quickly as possible, with updates provided on the Grand River Transit service alerts page
