University of Waterloo Adds Security Measures to Convocation as Pro-Palestinian Encampment Continues

Enhanced Security for Convocation Ceremonies

Extra security measures will accompany the caps and gowns at the University of Waterloo’s convocation ceremonies next week. With the ongoing presence of the pro-Palestinian protest encampment, the university is implementing additional security efforts to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the events.

Security Protocols

A university spokesperson confirmed to CityNews 570 that the school will require tickets for both graduates and their guests. Additionally, bags and personal items will be checked in the Physical Activities Complex. These measures are being taken “to ensure secure and smooth ceremonies during Convocation Week.”

Support for Free Speech

The university emphasized its support for the rights to freedom of speech and assembly, stating, “We want to convey our hope that these ceremonies are not disrupted.” The statement further highlighted the significance of convocation, noting, “Convocation is the culmination of our students’ hard work and dedication and is a special time for our community.”

Ongoing Encampment

Social media posts from the encampment show no indication of leaving campus anytime soon. However, there have been no specific mentions of plans to interfere with the convocation ceremonies. The new security measures will complement the standard security protocols the university would have in place any other year.
