Heavy Rain Expected This Weekend: Flood Watch Issued for St. Patrick’s Day

Heavy Rain Expected This Weekend Flood Watch Issued for St. Patrick’s Day

A special weather statement and flood watch are in effect for St. Patrick’s Day weekend, with significant rainfall expected to impact the region.

According to Environment Canada, rain will begin Saturday evening and continue through Sunday night, bringing between 20 to 40 mm of precipitation to Waterloo Region. Thunderstorms are also possible, and periods of heavy rain may lead to water pooling on roads and flooding in low-lying areas.

In response to these conditions, the Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the entire Grand River watershed.

“Higher flows in local waterways, combined with runoff from this system, will increase the risk of flooding in flood-prone areas,” the advisory warns. Officials urge municipal flood coordinators in Grand Valley, Waldemar, Drayton, West Montrose, the Village of Conestogo, New Hamburg, Ayr, Brantford, Six Nations, Caledonia, Cayuga, and Dunnville to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Adding to the unusual weather pattern, temperatures are set to climb to 18°C on Saturday before cooling to 12°C on Sunday as the moisture moves through.

Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution as conditions unfold.
