The man accused in the devastating attack at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, which left at least 11 people dead, has been formally charged with murder.
The BC Prosecution Service confirmed to 1130 NewsRadio that 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo now faces eight counts of second-degree murder. According to online court documents, Lo remains in custody following his initial court appearance Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) earlier revealed that Lo has a “significant history of interactions with police and health care professionals related to mental health.”
Following Lo’s court hearing, VPD Constable Tania Visintin stated that the “charge assessment is ongoing and further charges are anticipated.” She also noted that some victims from Saturday night’s mass-casualty incident have not yet been identified.
The tragedy unfolded around 8 p.m. on April 26, near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street, as thousands gathered to celebrate Filipino Lapu Lapu Day. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and BC Emergency Health Services reported transporting 26 patients to hospital, with injuries ranging from serious to critical.
Victims of the attack ranged in age from five to 65 years old.
“This is the darkest day in our city’s history,” said VPD Interim Chief Steve Rai. “Last night, during a vital cultural celebration for Vancouver’s Filipino community, the actions of a single individual shattered our collective sense of safety. It is impossible to overstate how many lives have been changed forever.”
In an additional detail, it has emerged that a man with the same name as the suspect lost his brother to a homicide in Vancouver in January 2024. Following that tragedy, he had organized fundraisers to support his family through the financial aftermath.
Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event are ongoing.
