WRDSB to Leave ‘X’ Citing Student Safety and Platform Concerns

WRDSB to Leave 'X' Citing Student Safety and Platform Concerns

Starting Friday, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) will officially step away from the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), citing concerns over safety and platform policy changes.

In a statement released Tuesday, the WRDSB explained its decision, pointing to recent shifts in the platform’s policies, safety features, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as key reasons for the move.

“Due to the application of policies, changes in community safety features, and use of artificial intelligence (AI) on the Twitter/X platform, WRDSB is no longer using X/Twitter as a communication channel,” the board said.

The WRDSB emphasized that the well-being of its school community remains its top priority: “We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff, families, and caregivers, and to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all.”

While the board’s ‘@WRDSB’ X account will remain live for now, it will no longer share updates. Instead, the account will serve only to redirect users to the board’s other official communication channels.
